Daniel 12: 1-4   1. At that time Michael shall stand up,

The great prince who stands watch over the sons of your people;

And there shall be a time of trouble,

Such as never was since there was a nation,

Even to that time.

And at that time your people shall be delivered,

Every one who is found written in the book.

2 And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake,

Some to everlasting life,

Some to shame and everlasting contempt.

3 Those who are wise shall shine

Like the brightness of the firmament,

And those who turn many to righteousness

Like the stars forever and ever.

4 “But you, Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book until the time of the end; many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase.”

V1(1) This is clearly the same event as Mat 24:21-2 For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. 22 And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect’s sake those days will be shortened. “Your people shall be delivered” equates with the days being shortened.

(2) This is the Book of Life, mentioned by Paul in Philippians 4:3 – “…….the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the Book of Life” and John mentioned seven times in Revelation.

V2 This verse is very reminiscent of 1Thess 4:13-18, where the dead in Christ shall rise first, and further proof that there is only one general rising of the dead.

V4 This all happens at the “time of the end”, of which there can only be one! There is only one end, in the sense of finish, to anything. Otherwise it is not really the end.

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus.

15 For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep. 16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. 18 Therefore comfort one another with these words.

Having seen that Dan 12:1-4 describes the same event as Mat 24, let’s press on to another scripture which obviously describes the same event, 1Thes 4:13-18.

Here are the signs from Mat 24:

  1. Sun and moon darkened
  2. Stars fall from heaven
  3. Powers of the heavens shaken
  4. Sign of the Son of Man appears
  5. Jesus comes with clouds, power and great glory.
  6. Angels come
  7. Great sound of a trumpet

V15-16 The Lord’s shout is reminiscent of coming with power and great glory. The trumpet of God is a pointer, if we needed any more convincing, that it’s the same event. These are the verses quoted by some in support of the “secret rapture” of the church before the tribulation. I can’t imagine any scenario less secret, with the Lord himself shouting, the voice of the archangel, and the Lord’s trumpet. The word “rapture” is not anywhere mentioned in the Bible but Jesus’ “appearing”, Greek = “parousia”, is mentioned in almost every book of the New Testament as we shall see. And, most importantly, whether it’s called “the Day of the Lord”, “that Day”, “the day of God” or “the last Day”, there is only one! No Bible writer ever refers to “when Jesus comes the second time” or “when Jesus comes the third time”!
