The Great Commission
Matt 28:29-30 – Victor Choudhrie
Therefore go ye and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of Jesus, and teach them all that I’ve commanded you … yea I am with you always, even unto the end of the Age.
- All the power in heaven and on earth is His!
- The sender is not your church, your organization, but Jesus Christ Himself!
- He alone sends us … He has all power in heaven and earth.
- The sender sends you with all power in heaven and in earth.
- Do we have all that power?
Matt 16:18-19
- I will build MY church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
- I give you the keys to the kingdom — what you bind … loose …
- He’s already done it — it’s not by our will.
The Great Commission — Jesus sends us with all power in heaven and in earth to bind and to loose …
Therefore … go!
Command #1 is ‘go’.
If you don’t go, the deal is finished.
Rule #1 is go
Rule #2 – make disciples of all nations
Disciple: follower of Jesus
John 15:8 we glorify God by making disciples
John 15:16 … you have not chosen me, but I have chosen you and ordained you. Every Christian who Jesus has chosen is an ordained Christian.
Priesthood of all believers … Every Christian is a priest
Jesus said, you have not chosen me, I have chosen you — ordained you that you may go and bring forth fruit that remains.
- Make disciples and baptise them
- Repentance
- Confession of faith
- Baptism
- Baptism of Holy Spirit
Everyone was baptised in the same day. Don’t preach the gospel and come back empty handed. Wherever Paul went he preached the gospel, made disciples…
He would never come back empty handed, he would make disciples, establish a church.
Jesus says, “Go and make disciples of all nations.”
Difference between believer and disciple
Believer … Mark 16:17 — believe in the promises of God
Mark 16:16-18
16 Whoever believes and is baptised will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.
17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues;
18 they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.”
Disciple… disciple the one you introduced to the Kingdom
- Praying to God doesn’t get you to heaven
- Sitting in church doesn’t get you to heaven
- Reading the Bible doesn’t get you to heaven
Making disciples is the key to go to heaven
Jesus isn’t talking about 1 or 2 disciples … he’s talking about abundant disciples. He wants the branches loaded with fruit.
The difference is the fruitful and the fruitless … the fruitless is chopped off and thrown into the fire.
The Great Commission has a lot of depth in it … go and make disciples of all nations
How many nations? 24,000 nations (people groups) 669 unreached groups in the world.
There are hundreds of millions of people who still have not heard the name of Jesus. So Jesus’ command is to go and make disciples of ALL nations.
- Equip every single member of the church to go out and make disciples.
- Hold people accountable for the six days they don’t meet…
- The shorter the sermon, the larger the church
The great commission is that Jesus is the Sender … to all nations.
#1: Go
#2: Make Disciples
#2a: All Nations Make a list of the nations in the surrounding area and pray for them every time you meet. It’s our duty to make sure all nations are reached.
#3: Baptise – same day. The one who disciples them is the baptiser so growth will accelerate. Yes, women can baptise. Do not wait for the “big shot” to baptise .. You lead them, you baptise them.
#4: Teach them to be obedient to all the commands Jesus has given us … teaching them to “Go” — the Great commission.
#5: Be witnesses — Go! (Acts 1:7-8 … But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”)
As the Father sent me, so I send you!
The Great Commission is the backbone of the Gospel.
The Great Commission carries the Gospel. The gospel won’t go anywhere if its not carried by us in response to theGreat Commission.
Christians need baptism of the feet to go …
